On October 29, 2026, Cohere announced the initial close of its Series E. The round targets up to CAD $7 billion, which would value the company at CAD $35.7 billion. Cohere says it is the largest private financing round ever undertaken by a Canadian technology company. The final amount depends on how much of the target closes.

Cohere Series E investors

The companies of Schwarz Group, the German retail group, lead the round. New investors include Bell Ventures, Bullhound Capital and the Government of Canada. Inovia Capital, NVIDIA and Prosperity7 Ventures are returning investors. CBC News, citing Reuters, reported that the federal government will invest up to $1.6 billion and that Schwarz pledged $780 million to lead.

Cohere's growth figures

Cohere states it ended Q3 2026 with 165% year-over-year growth in annual recurring revenue. It says its customer base grew 20 times over the past year, to 300 customers. Named customers include Bell Canada, RBC, TD Bank, Fujitsu and PwC. Cohere attributes the growth to North, its agentic AI platform, which received a major upgrade this year with North 2.

Use of funds

Chief Financial Officer Francois Chadwick said the funding will advance Cohere's models and products, build verticalized AI for regulated industries and invest in long-term compute to train frontier enterprise models. Cohere also plans to expand across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific.

Sovereign AI as the thesis

Cohere positions itself as a sovereign AI provider for governments and regulated industries. Its pitch is control: customers can deploy in private cloud, on premises or in fully air-gapped environments. Schwarz Digits CEO Christian Müller linked the investment to Cohere's combination with Aleph Alpha and to anchoring the models in Schwarz's STACKIT cloud. Cohere also completed transactions involving Reliant AI and AISLE in 2026.

The federal government's stake

Prime Minister Mark Carney said in the announcement that sovereignty depends on the ability to build, adopt and govern AI on Canada's own terms. Minister Evan Solomon said Canadian founders should not have to leave Canada to build a company that succeeds globally. Cohere says it is making commitments to support Canada's sovereign AI ecosystem as part of the investment, though the release does not list them.

An earlier bridge round

CPE Media & Data Company's Q3 report noted a $677.2 million Cohere SAFE bridge financing with no public information on its investors. The Series E arrives against a Canadian venture market where CPE recorded $4.71 billion across all deals in the first nine months of the year.

What the round means for Canadian startups

The round shows that a Canadian AI company can raise at global scale while staying headquartered in Canada. It also shows government acting as an equity investor, consistent with the AI for All strategy's plans for equity stakes in AI firms. For smaller companies, the clearest module is Cohere's focus: regulated customers, deployment control and measurable outcomes.

Founder takeaways

  • Sell control to regulated buyers. Data location and deployment choice are buying criteria in finance, health and government.
  • Partner with Canadian enterprises early. Cohere's named customers include major Canadian banks and telecoms.
  • Read the terms closely. Initial close and target amounts differ from final raised amounts.
  • Watch public equity programs. Federal co-investment in AI firms is now active.
