CPE Media & Data Company released its Q3 2026 Canadian venture data on October 20. It covers the first nine months of the year. The picture is weaker than the first-half data many founders saw in the summer. Investment fell, growth capital dropped sharply and US investors supplied most of the money.

Canadian VC through Q3 2026

CPE reports $4,714 million invested across 371 financings in the first nine months of 2026. That is down 7% from $5,073 million and down 17% from 449 financings in the same period of 2025.

US investors at a record share

US investors put in $3,030 million, or 64% of total funding, the highest share since 2017. US VC funds, corporate VCs and investment funds together invested $2,751 million, or 58%. Non-US international investors accounted for only 4% of funding. Canadian governments, VC funds and corporate investors together invested $1.074 billion, or 23%. Investors from 33 countries or regions took part, down from 55 in 2025.

Funding by stage

  • Early stage: $2,096 million, 44% of capital, unchanged in share from 2025.
  • Growth and later stage: $488 million, 10% of capital, down from 37% in 2025.
  • Bridge financing: $1,070 million, 23% of capital, up from 9% in 2025.

The rise in bridge financing and the drop in growth capital suggest companies are extending runway rather than raising new priced rounds. CPE notes that it has no public information on the investors in Cohere's $677.2 million SAFE bridge financing, which may affect parts of the data.

Funding by region and sector

Ontario companies raised $2,876 million, or 61% of the total, up from 56% in 2025. BC raised $877 million, Quebec $533 million and Alberta $325 million. Toronto alone accounted for 56%. ICT took $2,387 million, or 53%, down from 59%. Cleantech rose to 20% with $915 million. Life sciences held at 16% with $746 million. Aerospace and defence raised $172 million.

Fundraising and exits

Canadian VC firms raised $2,690 million across 40 funds, against $3,517 million across 62 funds in 2025. Radical Ventures' US$1 billion Breakouts Fund I and two new BDC Capital platforms made up 68% of that total. CPE reports no Canadian VC-backed IPOs since 2021 and no significant secondary transactions in the period. It named GSK's acquisition of 35Pharma as a notable liquidity event.

Richard Rémillard of Rémillard Consulting Group, quoted in the release, said the data "do not auger well" for the full-year tally. He named the decline in non-US VC investment as one trend to watch.

Comparing CPE and CVCA

CVCA's H1 2026 report showed dollars up 17% year over year to $2.69 billion. CPE's nine-month data shows dollars down 7%. The two organizations use different methods and deal definitions, so their totals do not match. Compare each tracker against its own prior periods.

Founder takeaways

  • Build a US investor pipeline. Most dollars now come from US investors.
  • Plan for a bridge before a priced round. Bridge financing more than doubled its share.
  • Raise growth capital early. The growth and later-stage share fell from 37% to 10%.
  • Look at cleantech and defence investors. Both sectors gained share in 2026.
